Song banned for ‘unprotected anal sex’ lyrics

Republic Of Loose have upped their notoriety a notch by having their single ‘Break!’ banned by South Africa’s biggest radio station. The controversy arose when a DJ of the radio station 5FM interpreted the songs lyrics as being about unprotected anal sex. Given South Africa’s Aids crisis this happens to be a very sensitive topic for the nation so the station decided to ban the song. The lyrics that got them banned are: “you like it rough, right?“, “I broke, you broke, we broke, she broke, Now tell me what you use” followed by the refrain “Nothing“. Full of innuendo all right but definitely open to interpretation and requiring a somewhat vivid imagination to make the connection to unprotected anal sex.

The double A-side single ‘Aaagh!/Break!’, lifted from their ‘Aaagh!’ album, was released on August 6th and made the top 40 in South Africa despite the fact that the band have never toured there. The ‘Aaagh!’ album was released in Ireland last year and a UK release of the album is forthcoming.
