Davy Spillane, musician, composer, producer and player of uilleann pipes and low whistle was playing music in Ireland, the UK and Europe in the mid-70s while he was still a teenager and began composing songs at that time. Along with Christy Moore and Donal Lunny he formed Moving Hearts in 1981.
Shortly after Moving Hearts disbanded, Spillane recorded his debut solo album, Atlantic Bridge. On Altlantic Bridge he collaborated with American musician Béla Fleck, Englishman Albert Lee, Jerry Douglas, and others to explore the connections between Celtic music, and American folk music, bluegrass and blues. On his next album Out Of The Air, released in 1988 as Davy Spillane Band, he collaborated with Rory Gallagher on 3 tracks. Rory plays electric sitar on 'The Road to Ballyalla'; electric and acoustic slide guitars on 'Litton Lane'; acoustic "Silvertone" guitar on 'One for Phil' (a tribute to Phil Lynott).
Subsequently Spillane released two additional solo albums -- Shadow Hunter in 1990 and Pipedreams in 1991. His next album was a collaboration with Andy Irvine. Other solo albums were A Place Among The Stones in 1994, The Sea of Dreams in 1998, Deep Blue Sea in 2004 and Between Longing & Belonging in 2016.
Spillane has a long list of collaborations and appearances on the recordings of other artists, some noteworthy ones include Van Morrison, Chris Rea, Mary Coughlan, Enya, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Mike Oldfield, Sinead O'Connor, Bryan Adams and Afro Celt Sound System.
