Hothouse Flowers, formed in 1985 in Dublin, are an Irish rock band blending traditional Irish music with soul, gospel, and rock influences. Founders Liam Ó Maonlaí and Fiachna Ó Braonáin began as buskers in Dublin, initially known as "The Incomparable Benzini Brothers," before changing their name and gaining recognition. They released their first single, "Love Don't Work This Way", on U2's Mother Records label, which quickly led to a deal with the PolyGram subsidiary London Records. Their debut album, People (1988), became the most successful debut in Irish history, reaching No. 1 in Ireland and No. 2 in the UK, aided by their single "Don't Go."
After two more albums, Home (1990) and Songs from the Rain (1993), the band went on hiatus in 1994 due to exhaustion and personal changes. They reunited in 1998, releasing Born and performing at festivals like Glastonbury. Over the years, they released additional albums, including Into Your Heart (2004) and Let's Do This Thing (2016), which featured a resurgence in popularity after a live performance on The Grand Tour.
The band has seen various lineup changes and pursued solo projects, with notable contributions from members like Liam Ó Maonlaí and Peter O'Toole. Tragically, former member Leo Barnes passed away in April 2022.
