About Orphanage

Orphanage was formed in late '69 by Phil Lynott along with long-time mate Brian Downey who had also been Phil's first band, The Black Eagles, after Phil was dropped from Skid Row. Downey had just come from Sugar Shack. The lineup also included Pat Quigley on bass - Phil was only learning bass at the time, taking lessons from Brush Sheils of his former band, Skid Row. Pat Quigley also helped Phil with his bass playing. The band also included Joe Staunton on guitar. Staunton and Quigley had been together in a band called Macbeth. Terry Woods (Sweeny's Men, Steeleye Span, Dr. Strangely Strange, The Woods Band, The Pogues) was an occasional member. Orphanage only lasted for less than a year as Lynott and Downey teamed up with Eric Bell and Eric Wrixon to form Thin Lizzy. Joe Staunton revived the Orphanage band name in '73 for a short while but it was an entirely different lineup. Staunton and Downey would later play together in a band called The Alleycats (later Talk to Strangers) in the 80s.
