Shock Treatment was a post-punk band formed in Belfast in 1978, centred around vocalist Barry McIlheney, guitarist Davy McLarnon, and bassist David "Basil" McCausland. The band's lineup changed several times, with notable members including Tim Kerr and Chris Loughridge before stabilizing with drummer Paul Kelly. Inspired by bands like The Ramones, they became popular in Belfast's punk scene, performing at venues like The Harp Bar and later setting up their own tours. They recorded tracks for Good Vibrations, but their debut single was never released due to financial issues, though one track, "Belfast Telegraph," appeared on a 1980 compilation.
Shock Treatment became a popular live act around Belfast played support to major acts at The Ulster Hall including U2, The Skids and Psychedelic Furs. They released their second single, "Big Check Shirts," in 1981. However, the band dissolved in 1982 after McIlheney left to pursue a successful journalism career. McLarnon continued in music, forming bands like Five Boys and Big Electric PLC, and later went on to join successful 90's Belfast band Peacefrog who toured extensively until 1994.
Shock Treatment's last known line up was: Barry McIlhenny - vocals, David McLarnon - guitar, Basil McCausland - bass, Paul Kelly - drums. David McLarnon
In 2011, McLarnon revived Shock Treatment as 'Shock Treatment 21' with a new lineup, releasing tracks from the original band and forming. This new incarnation found success as a live act, and in 2024, the band, now just "Shock Treatment," released their second album, Exclusive Photos, with McIlheney returning as the lead vocalist.
