Sixteen Layers were a four piece alternative hard rock band from Dublin formed in 2006 from the remnants of a previous group called Alligator. In 2007 they got a deal with an indie label and everything started off fine as the band began work on recording their debut album with Jim Lowe (Foo Fighters, Charlatans) at The Sawmills Studio in Cornwall. However trouble was brewing between the band and the record company. The record company were trying to get the band to make changes that they weren't on-board with, while at the same time the label was facing financial difficulties. So the eventually record deal fell through. The band were deflated and thought about quitting at that stage, but they dusted themselves off and continued work on completing their album. They self released their I Am No One in 2009. Hot Press described the album as a 'sonic tour de force'.
The band followed the album release with live shows around Dublin. In July 2009 they won the Dublin leg of Indie Week Ireland, run by Toronto-based Promoter Darryl Hurs, allowing Sixteen Layers the opportunity to go to Toronto and showcase during the Canadian Indie Week competition in October the same year. Sixteen Layers were largely voted as the band to see over Indie Week. According to one reviewer “Sixteen Layers was brilliant, really one to remember. Sixteen Layers kicked ass and had everyone smiling. For the first time in a long time I saw a band play an encore and this encore was fully merited. I never wanted this show to end. Sixteen Layers at The Hideout, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in Toronto”.
Sixteen Layers next and final release was the EP Science And Love released in 2012.
