Snow Patrol were formed under the name "Shrug" in 1994 by a group of lads from Northern Ireland while attending University of Dundee in Scotland. They released an EP as Shrug and changed their name to Polarbear in 1996. As Polarbear they released an EP before finally changing the name to Snow Patrol.
Snow Patrol initially gained recognition with their 2003 album Final Straw. The band, led by Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar), experienced commercial success with hits like "Run" and "Chasing Cars," which became the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio by 2019. Their breakthrough was followed by Eyes Open (2006) and A Hundred Million Suns (2008), cementing their place in the international music scene.
Their early years saw struggles with their first two albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), both of which were critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful. After joining Polydor Records in 2002 and adding Nathan Connolly as lead guitarist, Snow Patrol found success, particularly with Final Straw. Their 4th album 'Eyes Open', released in 2006, topped Irish & UK charts. Over the years, they released Fallen Empires (2011) and Wildness (2018), navigating lineup changes, including the departure of bassist Paul Wilson and drummer Jonny Quinn in 2023.
In 2024, the band released The Forest Is the Path, continuing as a trio with Lightbody, Connolly, and Johnny McDaid. Snow Patrol has won several awards, including seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and multiple nominations for Brit Awards and Grammys. Their music, especially Chasing Cars, remains highly influential, with widespread recognition in both the UK and globally.
