Born in the village of Glounthaune, just outside of Cork city, Coughlan was active on the local Cork scene in the late 1970s, and after meeting Sean O'Hagan formed Microdisney as a duo in 1980. After Mocrodisney broke up in 1988, Coughlan formed The Fatima Mansions which lasted until 1995.
After the Fatima Mansions split, Coughlan continued as a solo artist and released six solo albums (Grand Necropolitan in 1996, Black River Falls in 2000, The Sky's Awful Blue in 2002, Foburg in 2006, Rancho Tetrahedron in 2010 and Song of Co-Aklan in 2021. His 2010 album Rancho Tetrahedron, released as "Cathal Coughlan and the Grand Necropolitan Quartet," was noted for its dark lyricism and Latin influences.
Coughlan also recorded parodic music with Sean Hughes, Rob Allum, and Paul Jarvis as "Bubonique," and collaborated with Luke Haines on The North Sea Scrolls, which premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011 and was released in 2012.

Working with Jacknife Lee as a duo called Telefís, two albums were released - A hAon in 2022 and A Dó in October 2022.
Cathal Coughlan died in hospital on 18 May 2022 after an extended illness.
