David Holmes from Belfast worked as a DJ before releasing several solo albums that have incorporated elements of trip hop, big beat, electronic and rock.
His debut album, This Film's Crap Let's Slash the Seats, in July 1995, an album inspired by movies and soundtracks. The track "No Man's Land" featured in the film Pi. In the same year, he contributed ambient links to Therapy?'s album Infernal Love. His 1997 album Let's Get Killed gained commercial success with the single "My Mate Paul".
Holmes' 1997 Essential Mix, blending northern soul, psychedelic funk, and hip hop, was named mix of the year by Muzik magazine. He scored Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight in 1998 and contributed to the Ocean's Eleven remake in 2001. After releasing a remix album in 2002, Holmes formed The Free Association for his 2003 album, marking a shift from his solo work.
He remixed tracks for various artists and composed music for the 2008 iPhone ad campaign. His 2008 album The Holy Pictures included tracks featured in Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 and the 2012 Olympics. Holmes also scored the film Hunger with Leo Abrahams, earning an IFTA at the Irish Film Awards.
In April 2009, he topped The Irish Times' "50 Best Irish Acts Right Now" list. His film Good Vibrations, set in the 1970s Belfast punk rock scene, was co-produced by his film company Canderblicks Film and was nominated for a BAFTA. The soundtrack was named Rough Trade's Compilation of the Year in 2013.
In November 2023, Holmes released his first album in 15 years, a collaboration with God Daughter Raven Violet, Blind On A Galloping Horse.
