The forerunner to Sack was an 80s band called Lord John White which included frontman Martin McCann and guitarist John Brereton. The band gained some traction with their track "Kill The One You Love" featured in the film The Courier, but a serious van accident severely injured Brereton, derailing their progress. After his recovery, Sack was formed, marking a new and experimental phase for the group.
In 1994, Sack demoed an EP titled What Have The Christians Ever Done For Us and successfully secured a deal with Lemon Records. Their EP gained critical acclaim and led to the release of their album You Are What You Eat, boosting their profile with extensive press coverage and tours with notable bands. However, Lemon Records' financial troubles led to its collapse.
As Sack's lineup shifted, with Derek Lee moving on and Dave Dorgan joining, their music took on a more melodic, pop-oriented sound. Despite positive reviews for their Butterfly Effect album, promotional support was limited due to Dirt Records' budget constraints.
A significant moment came when Morrissey praised their live performance, leading to opportunities to tour Europe and the USA with him. The tour enhanced their visibility and sales, bolstering their confidence. Following this, their 2001 album Adventura Majestica was their most successful album.
The band did not release any more material until their 2021 single What A Way To Live. Another single, Wake Up People, followed in 2024 from a forthcoming album of the same name.
