The Adventures were a Northern Irish rock and pop band formed in Belfast in 1984 by ex-members of The Starjets. They were known for their blend of folk-tinged pop and rock music. The band achieved significant recognition during the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly with their hit single "Broken Land," written by guitarist Pat Gribben. The song reached number 20 in the UK Singles Chart in 1988 and became the most played song on BBC Radio 1 that year, propelling the band into the spotlight. Despite critical acclaim and a strong start, The Adventures never managed a major commercial breakthrough.
The band was formed by lead vocalist Terry Sharpe and guitarist Pat Gribben, who had previously been part of the punk band The Starjets. After a brief stint with Chrysalis Records and some moderate chart success with songs like "Another Silent Day" and "Send My Heart," The Adventures moved to Elektra Records, where they scored their biggest hit with "Broken Land." Their follow-up album, The Sea of Love, earned a Silver certification in the UK, but subsequent releases like Trading Secrets with the Moon and Lions and Tigers and Bears failed to achieve commercial success.
Active through the 1980s and early 1990s, the band was managed by the influential Simon Fuller but struggled to maintain momentum. They split in 1994 after a final album on Polydor Records. The Adventures have since reunited several times for live performances, but no new studio material has been released since their breakup.
Despite their relatively short-lived success, The Adventures remain a beloved act for fans of '80s and '90s pop-rock. Members like Gribben and Sharpe continued their music careers post-breakup, with Gribben writing for other artists and Sharpe performing in cover bands.
