About For Ruin

For Ruin, an extreme metal band formed in Cork in 2003 by John Murphy, began as a solo project. Murphy, who had been writing material since 1997-98, recorded three solo demos—Split (2004), Shade (2005), and Obsidian (2006)—before establishing a full band lineup in late 2005. The Split demo included tracks from a collaboration with Taranis (ex-Belinus) and was released in 2004 after Murphy's move to Spain. Shade, released in 2005, was well-received and increased the band's profile in Ireland.

In late 2005, Murphy, joined by Dunnie, Ollie O'Shea, and Steve O'Connell, played their first live shows. Obsidian (2006) marked the end of Murphy's solo involvement and was praised for its strong tracks despite mixed production. The band's lineup changed in mid-2006, leading to a new recording phase and the debut album, December (2007). This album, while featuring strong songs, suffered from production issues due to Murphy's stressful circumstances and lack of stable band input.

In 2008, the band began working on their second album, Last Light, recorded in January 2009 and released in September 2009. This album featured new members and received positive reviews. The band experienced further lineup changes, including a new drummer and guitarist, and recorded four new songs in 2011.

By early 2013, For Ruin had enough material for their third album, Ater Angelus. During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, Murphy wrote and released two digital EPs and remixed the debut album, December, for a 2021 reissue. The band maintained activity with these releases and older demo materials.
