Shortly after the Sex Pistols lit the punk fuse in 1976, the punk explosion hit Ireland and a plothora of punk bands were spawned. One of the first among these was The Radiators From Space (later shortened to The Radiators) who had their first hit with 'Television Screen' in 1977.
Up north, The Undertones from Derry and Rudi from Belfast had already been formed before punk hit, but by the end of '76 had joined the punk revolution.
Belfast record store owner, Terri Hooley formed the Good Vibrations record label which released records for many punk bands in Northern Ireland, the first being Rudi's single 'Big Time' in April '78. The most famous Good Vibrations release was 'Teenage Kicks' which took the Undertones from the verge of calling it a day to a big label deal and a series of best selling singles and albums. Other punk bands that had material relased by Good Vibrations includes The Outcasts, Protex, Victim, Ruefrex from Belfast and The Moondogs from Derry.
The Boomtown Rats were another band formed pre-punk but they were heavily influenced by the punk scene. They moved to London and released their first single 'Looking After Number One' in 1977. It was the first of many hits for the Rats who were one of the first Irish bands to make it big worldwide.
Stiff Little Fingers released their first single 'Suspect Device' in March '78 which was a hit and landed them a deal with Rough Trade records on which they released their classic 'Alternative Ulster' and one of the all time punk classic albums 'Inflammable Material'.
Shane McGowan got involved in the punk scene in London in the late 70's with his band The Nipple Erectors and then in the early 80s had the genius idea of punking up Irish folk music and along with a few other like minded musicians formed Pogue Mahone which became The Pogues. The Pogues were later joined Phil Chevron from The Radiators.
Post-punk group Fontaines D.C., formed in 2014, shot to fame following the release of their 2019 album Dogrel and have become Ireland's top band of the modern era.
