About Protex

Protex, a punk band from Belfast, formed in 1978 and were part of the city's first punk wave alongside The Undertones and Rudi. Their initial records were released by Good Vibrations, a label influential in the Northern Irish punk scene. The band, inspired by The Clash’s visit to Belfast, originally named Protex Blue, shortened their name to avoid confusion with blues music.

They quickly gained local attention, leading to a recording session with Good Vibrations and a single release. Following positive reviews and radio play, they signed with Polydor Records, recorded singles, and supported acts like Adam and the Ants and The Boomtown Rats.

Protex toured the UK, America, and Canada, and appeared in the short film "Shellshock Rock." They released their final single for Polydor in 1981 before disbanding.

In 2010, renewed interest came with the release of unreleased recordings. The band reformed with new members, toured, and released a live album. By 2017, the lineup included John Rossi on bass.
