Lauren Guillery is a French born singer and guitarist who lives in Ireland. She lived in Dublin for 15 years before moving to West Cork in 2015. In 2007 she was awarded ‘Best International Act’ at the Balcony TV music awards for the acoustic performance of her up-tempo song 'Rude' and released the same year her now sold-out debut E.P ‘Listen!’.
With Sonic Youth and Led Zeppelin listed as two main influences, Guillery's raw and somewhat dark compositions incorporate an odd mix of blues and punk. With a voice instantly arresting with a built-in rock snarl that demands you stop and listen, Lauren Guillery's performances are delivered with such energy that the feisty songwriter has been compared to a 'rock queen' and 'rock goddess' by gig promoters and punters alike. She has toured Ireland and shared the stage with such artists as post-punks Ungdomskulen, French sensation female Les Plastiscines and countless Irish acts including God Is An Astronaut and Cathy Davey.
Lauren Guillery is also a founder and committed Ambassador to the Peace Zone organisation for which she hopes to create a great artist following. The purpose of the charity is to take the message of Peace past international waters and bring music performances in areas of conflict abroad in the near future.
Guillery's long awaited debut album ‘Disaster in La La Land’ was released in 2018. Recorded in two Leinster locations, Disaster in La La Land affirms Guillery’s first rate songwriting and producing abilities, and the strong punk and blues influences that were already present in her 2007 debut EP ‘Listen!’. With a big sound that draws comparisons with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and some early PJ Harvey material, the album was co-produced by Stephen Shannon at Experimental Audio in Dublin and blends catchy upbeat songs with darker, heavier sounding numbers.
Having worked for ten years at an office job to save enough funds to produce an album, Lauren faced a cancer scare in 2013 that spurred her into getting her songs finally recorded so she could leave her mark on planet Earth. A fun and thought-out album, it was recorded using two different rhythm sections and studios. At The Green Room – a coastal studio in Greystones, co. Wicklow, Anthony d’Arcy’s (The Winters) fast-paced, dancy drums combined with Shane Murphy’s (Land Lovers, NoMonsterClub) disco bass lines provide a quirky pop-rock, up-tempo element that is less present in the rest of the album. The remainder of the recording took place in Dublin’s Experimental Audio with Brian O’Higgins (Spook of The Thirteenth Lock) on drums and Phil Daly (Howl, Elastic Affair) on bass providing a more punk, bass-driven outlook. Lauren’s guitar riffs and licks remind us that surf rock and Chicago blues didn’t happen that long ago, yet a grungy darker vibe runs throughout the album. With dreamy saxophones by Ewa Gigon and synths arranged by Stephen Shannon (Mount Alaska, Strands), Lauren’s voice and harmonies round up the package and bring the catchy lyrics home, to bring out an all round brilliant debut album.
