View Mark Geary Profile on All Music
Mark Geary is an singer-songwriter from Dublin. In 1992, he made the leap to New York City, where he was initially daunted by the vibrant music scene, particularly at the iconic Sin-é bar. “It was a huge amount of pressure,” he recalls, noting the presence of artists like Jeff Buckley, Katell Keineg, and Sinéad O'Connor. Seeking a more comfortable environment, Geary started performing at smaller venues like Sidewalk Café and secured a regular spot at the Pink Pony. He eventually returned to Sin-é, sharing the stage with the likes of Keineg and Buckley.
Ironically during this period, Mark wrote some of his darkest and extremely vulnerable songs filled with demons such as Gingerman, Volunteer and It beats me. These songs all feature on his self titled first album but alas the record company went under before the album had a chance to find its audience. So it wasn't until 2003 and the release of 33 1/3 Grand Street that Mark could finally bring his music to the table. Over flowing with songs that deserved to heard, Mark did what he knew best and took to the road. It was while on tour that he found inspiration for some new songs that would go on to feature on Mark's sophomore album Ghosts released in 2004. The album garnered critical acclaim in both Ireland and the U.S., earning the title of Album of the Year (2005) from the Irish Voice. The album features collaborations with vocalists Glen Hansard and Josh Ritter and ranked 68th in HotPress's list of the Top 100 Greatest Irish Albums. His third studio album, Opium, arrived in 2008, followed by a live recording, Live, Love, Lost It – NYC, capturing his performances from the summer of 2009.
In 2012, he released Songs about Love, Songs about Leaving, which included contributions from Glen Hansard and Jenna Nichols. His fifth studio album, The Fool, came out in October 2017.
Throughout his career, Geary has toured extensively, supporting notable artists worldwide. In 2008, he opened for the Oscar-winning duo The Swell Season on their European tour, and in 2010, he joined Glen Hansard for his solo European tour. He has also shared the stage with Josh Ritter, Bell X1, The Frames, Coldplay, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, and Joe Strummer, among others.
His most recent singles, "The Forest" and "Spectre," released in May and December 2020, respectively, were produced by Ruth O'Mahony-Brady (ROMY).
