Microdisney were a rock band formed in Cork in 1980, led by songwriters Cathal Coughlan (keyboards, vocals) and Sean O'Hagan (guitar). Initially known as Micro Disney, the band adopted the name Microdisney after relocating to London in 1983, where they signed to Rough Trade Records. Over the next few years, they gained recognition, recording six Peel Sessions for BBC Radio and releasing their debut album, Everybody Is Fantastic.
In 1985, their album The Clock Comes Down the Stairs reached number one on the UK Indie Chart, and the band found success in Ireland with their 1987 single "Town to Town." The track also charted in the UK, peaking at number 55, and was followed by "Gale Force Wind" in 1988. Despite this success, the band split up on 1 July 1988, just days after supporting David Bowie at London's Dominion Theatre.
Following the breakup, O'Hagan and Coughlan pursued separate musical projects—O'Hagan with The High Llamas and Coughlan with The Fatima Mansions. Coughlan also collaborated with Sean Hughes in Bubonique and with Luke Haines on The North Sea Scrolls.
In 2017, a radio documentary titled Iron Fist in Velvet Glove – The Story of Microdisney was produced by Paul McDermott and aired on Newstalk 106-108fm. In 2018, Microdisney reunited for the first time in 30 years, performing live in Dublin and London, and were awarded an IMRO/NCH Trailblazer Award for The Clock Comes Down the Stairs.
Their final performances took place in Dublin and Cork in February 2019. A 2024 documentary, Microdisney: The Clock Comes Down the Stairs, chronicling the band’s history and reunion, was broadcast on BBC4 on 15 March 2024.
