Panama Kings formed at the start of 2007 initially as a side project for members of other Northern Irish acts such as Queer Giraffes, The Jane Bradford, Clone Quartet and Fast Emperors. They started writing and gigging in earnest towards the end of the year, making a firm impression in double-quick time. With a few simple goals to keep it fun, fresh and to create an indie-rock-dance-party suitable for clubs every bit as much as live shows, the band refuse to acknowledge any form of industry pressure and are resolute in their manifesto.
Their debut single – YOUNG BLOOD was released on We Collect Records in July to much critical acclaim and airplay including several plays on Zane Lowe on Radio 1. It’s startling to see what they have achieved in such little time. It seems that everything they go for they win – The JD Set Unsigned in London (with over 75% of the vote); prestigious support to YOUNG KNIVES ,UNDERTONES, BRITISH SEA POWER, DODGY and MALCOLM MIDDLETON. Already drawing comparisons with indie luminaries such as Modest Mouse, Pixies, and the Walkmen, Panama Kings employ razor-sharp Gang Of Four guitars over dance-rock rhythms, frenetic keyboards and just enough Sonic Youth noise to stay this side of melodic, with Niall Kennedy’s Superchunk/ Flaming Lips-esque vocal style perhaps being the bands strongest suit.
The quartet went on to record and released 3 proper singles - 'Young Blood' [2007], 'Children / Skeleton Key' [2008] and 'Golden Recruit' [2009]. In addition to this, the band released a couple of internet only packages in 2009 - 'Strummerville / Oh Yeah Sessions' EP and a '2009 Tour Compilation' which gathered together tracks from the band's catalogue.
In 2010, the band announced that they were to split and played their final gig on 4th November at the Radar in Belfast.
