Pugwash is an pop band fronted by Drimnagh-born musician Thomas Walsh. The band, known for its melodic and retro-inspired sound, has released six albums since its debut in 1999.
Walsh started recording music under the Pugwash name in the early 1990s, after using compensation money from a childhood accident to build a recording studio in a shed. His breakthrough came in 1995 when one of his demos was named "Demo of the Year" by Hot Press, leading to a connection with US producer Kim Fowley and Irish singer-songwriter Andy White. Walsh's first album, Almond Tea (1999), was well-received and landed in the top 23 of Hot Press's top albums of the millennium. The band toured extensively, including supporting acts like Television and Grant-Lee Phillips.
In 2002, Almanac was released, featuring collaborations with Jason Falkner and comparisons to 1960s and '70s pop. The album caught the attention of XTC's Andy Partridge, who praised the single "Apples." The song "Anyone Who Asks" from Almanac was later featured in the film Pride and Glory (2008). Pugwash's third album, Jollity (2005), featured string arrangements from Dave Gregory of XTC and contributions from Partridge, among others, and was highly acclaimed.
In 2006, Walsh recorded a charity Christmas single, "Tinsel and Marzipan," with artists like Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy. Pugwash's fourth album, 11 Modern Antiquities (2008), again featured collaborations with notable musicians like Partridge, Gregory, and Hannon, and was met with critical praise. The band's work led to a deal with Partridge's Ape House label in 2009.
After a brief hiatus and side projects, including recording as part of The Duckworth Lewis Method, Walsh returned with The Olympus Sound (2011), which featured guest appearances from Hannon, Gregory, and Ben Folds. Pugwash continued to release new material and reissue earlier works, expanding their fanbase internationally. In 2015, the band released Play This Intimately (As If Among Friends).
In 2017, Walsh returned Pugwash to a solo project and recorded the album Silverlake in Los Angeles with Jason Falkner as producer.
