Republic of Loose, a funk rock band from Dublin, was formed in 2001. The initial lineup included lead vocalist Mick Pyro, bass guitarist and vocalist Benjamin Loose, keyboardist Deco, guitarists and vocalists Dave Pyro and Brez, and drummer Coz Noelen. Their musical style, described as “the stuff your dad likes,” blends rock with funk, soul, and jazz.
The band signed with Big Cat Records in 2003 and released their debut album, "This is the Tomb of the Juice", in 2004. They gained notable recognition, including being named "Hope for 2004" at the Meteor Awards. Their singles "Comeback Girl" and "You Know It" achieved significant airplay on Irish radio.
In 2006, Republic of Loose released their second album, "Aaagh!", which reached number two on the Irish Albums Chart, went platinum, and earned a Choice Music Prize nomination. The album's singles, such as "Break," enjoyed notable success, with "Break" being banned briefly in South Africa due to its controversial lyrics.
Their third album, "Vol IV: Johnny Pyro and the Dance of Evil", released in 2008, was their most successful, with the single "The Steady Song" reaching number twelve on the Irish Singles Chart. The album featured collaborations with artists like Sinéad O'Connor and received praise for its originality.
In 2010, the band released their fourth album, "Bounce at the Devil", and performed at notable festivals and venues.
The band's lineup changed in 2009, and they continued to perform and record until their split was announced in August 2014. Despite the breakup, Republic of Loose had earned significant admiration from musicians such as U2, Snow Patrol, and Sinéad O'Connor, and were noted for their influence in the Irish music scene.
