About Sandstone

Sandstone formed in Derry in 2003 when Sean McBay and Stevie McLaughlin began writing and recording in Stevie's home studio. Musically Sandstone is known for its intricate sound, blending neo-NWOBHM with progressive rock. Their music combines heartfelt melodies, strong songwriting, and emotional lyrics, creating a unique sound that appeals to fans of both hard rock and progressive metal. The band initially gained attention with their energetic live performances and by frequently playing at local Northern Irish pubs and festivals.

Their first release, the EP Life Giving Sun, helped them build a solid fan base, and they won the top prize at the Hammersmith Battle of the Bands festival. This led to a deal with the UK label Casket Music (part of CoproRecords), and their debut full-length album, Tides of Opinion, was released in 2006. The album received praise from Hard Rock/Metal music publications and their live show was highly rated by Kerrang.

In 2009, they followed up with Purging the Past, which received critical acclaim and earned them a glowing endorsement from Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, who called it "the most promising thing to come out of Ireland in years." Due to the success of the album, Sandstone signed a five-album deal with the German label Limb Music, with the first release under the new deal being a remastered version of Purging the Past.

In 2011, Sandstone released their third album, Cultural Dissonance, which further evolved their sound while retaining the band's signature ability to craft melodic and emotionally charged songs. The album blends heavy riffs with softer, ballad-like tracks, all while showcasing the powerful vocals of lead singer Sean McBay. McBay's emotive delivery is central to the band's sound, particularly on tracks like "Sleep" and "Trick of Mind." Along with founding members McBay (vocals) and Stevie McLaughlin (guitar), the band's lineup includes Stevie’s brother, David McLaughlin (bass), and drummer Dan Lafford. At the time of Cultural Dissonance's release, Lafford had been replaced by Brian Doherty, and Dee Kivlehan joined as an additional guitarist.

Their fourth album Delta Viridian was released in 2013 to favourable reviews. A fifth album, Epsilon Sky, was released in 2021.

With their combination of hard rock, prog rock, and neo-NWOBHM influences, Sandstone’s sound draws comparisons to bands like Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Symphony X, and Fates Warning.

Stevie McLaughlin released a solo album in 2018. He also performs with Tim 'Ripper' Owens as his touring guitarist in Europe.
