The Divine Comedy is an pop band founded in 1989 and led by Neil Hannon, who has been the band's sole constant member. Initially named October, the group changed its name to The Divine Comedy in homage to Dante Alighieri's work. Their debut album, Fanfare for the Comic Muse, was followed by several lineup changes, eventually leaving Hannon as the sole member.
The band gained recognition with Liberation (1993) and Promenade (1994), though they didn't achieve major commercial success until Casanova (1996). Hits like "Something for the Weekend" and "National Express" marked their peak popularity. Following Fin De Siècle (1998), which included the top ten hit "National Express," the band experienced shifts in style and lineup.
In 2001, Hannon shifted to a solo approach under The Divine Comedy name with the album Regeneration. He later released Absent Friends (2004), and continued to release albums such as Victory for the Comic Muse (2006) and Bang Goes the Knighthood (2010), while working on various side projects.
Their eleventh album, Foreverland (2016), was followed by the double album Office Politics (2019). To celebrate their 30th anniversary, they released a comprehensive box set titled Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time in 2020 and a compilation album Charmed Life in 2022, which topped the Official Independent Albums Chart.
