Chequerboard is John Lambert, a Dublin based guitarist / producer. The debut Chequerboard album 'Gothica' was released in 2002 through Reverb records (US) and the follow up E.P. 'Dictaphone Showreels' was released Nov 2005 through Lazybird. Past support slots include Susumu Yokota & Murcof. 'I've recently developed a live set which comprises of layered guitar passages without the laptop, built up on guitar pedals and loop stations so there's nothing pre-recorded.'
His second album, Penny Black, was released in 2008 on Irish alternative label Lazybird. The reviews for that album were universally positive. He released his third album, The Unfolding in 2013 which features accomplished producer Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins) on mixing duties and it has been described as 'a record of serene and shimmering beauty'. After a gap of 11 years, another album, Souvenir, was released in 2024. In an Irish Times review, Tony Clayton-Lea called Souvenir 'a work of rare beauty'.
