Kíla is a contemporary Irish folk music group formed in 1987 at Coláiste Eoin in County Dublin. The original lineup included Rossa and Rónán Ó Snodaigh, Eoin Dillon, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Karl Odlum, and David Odlum, with flute player Colm Ó Snodaigh joining in 1988. The band began by busking on Grafton Street and performing at family events, eventually playing at festivals like Montreux Jazz Festival and Glastonbury. in 1991, fiddler Colm Mac Con Iomaire and guitarist Dave Odlum left Kíla to join the band The Frames. In 1994, Karl Odlum left and joined Mic Christopher's band The Mary Janes.
Kíla has collaborated on significant projects, including the soundtrack for the Oscar-nominated film The Secret of Kells in 2010 and Song of the Sea in 2015, receiving nominations for an Annie Award and an Emmy. They also created music for the films Arracht and Wolfwalkers, winning 'Best Original Score' at the IFTA awards.
Over the years, the band's lineup has evolved, with members leaving and joining, including the addition of Seanán Brennan in 2009 and Dave Hingerty in 2010.
Kíla have worked extensively in TV and film. In 2020 they won the IFTA for Best Original Score for the soundtrack or Arracht (TG4). Their most notable collaborations have been with French composer Bruno Coulais on the soundtracks for Cartoon Saloon’s three Oscar-nominated animated films The Secret of Kells (2010), Song of the Sea (2014), and Wolfwalkers (2020).
