The Vipers were a Punk/New Wave band active in the late 1970s fronted by Paul Boyle and guitarist George Sweeney. They were known for their energetic live performances. Emerging from Dublin's punk scene, they played at Ireland's first punk festival in 1977, which became controversial after a fatal stabbing in the crowd, leading to the scene’s blacklisting.
In 1978, The Vipers headlined gigs with U2 as a support act and released their debut single, which caught the attention of BBC's John Peel. After relocating to London, they toured with acts like Thin Lizzy and the Boomtown Rats and released another single in 1980 before disbanding later that year.
Members went on to other music careers, while Boyle transitioned into acting. He passed away in London in 2019.
