About Therapy?

Therapy? is an alternative rock/metal band formed in 1989 in Lisburn. The group was founded by guitarist Andy Cairns, bassist Michael McKeegan, and drummer Fyfe Ewing. Initially, Therapy? emerged from the post-punk and noise rock scenes, drawing inspiration from bands like the Pixies and Nirvana. The band’s early work garnered attention with their debut EP, Babyteeth (1991), which included a mix of grunge and alternative rock influences. The album's unique sound and lyrical content, exploring themes of mental health and personal struggle, helped Therapy? gain a dedicated following.

In 1994, Therapy? released thed album, Nurse, which marked a significant breakthrough for the band. The album was a commercial success and included the hit single "Screamager". This success was bolstered by their energetic live performances and extensive touring, including shows with major bands like Nirvana.

Their third album, Troublegum (1994), was their biggest success and expanded their fan base. The album, featuring tracks like "Nowhere" and "Die Laughing," received critical acclaim and commercial success. Troublegum was followed by Infernal Love (1995), which continued to explore themes of psychological turmoil.

As the band moved into the late 1990s and early 2000s, their sound evolved, incorporating more diverse influences. Albums such as Semi-Detached (1998) and High Anxiety (2003) demonstrated their adaptability and willingness to experiment with new styles. Despite changing musical landscapes and a shifting industry, Therapy? maintained their relevance and continued to produce thought-provoking music.

The 2000s saw the band navigate various lineup changes, with long-time drummer Fyfe Ewing leaving the group in 1996 and being replaced by different drummers over the years. Despite these challenges, Therapy? remained a staple in the alternative rock scene.

In the 2010s, Therapy? embraced their legacy while continuing to innovate. They released A Brief Crack of Light (2012), which received positive reviews and showcased their enduring creativity. The band continued to tour extensively.

Their 2018 album, Cleave, marked a return to a heavier sound, reminiscent of their earlier work. The band’s commitment to their craft was evident in their energetic live performances and their ability to connect with both new and long-time fans.
