Jerry Fish is Gerard Whelan who was the front-man of An Emotional Fish. He formed Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club in 2002. The group is characterized by its eclectic, roots-influenced sound, blending elements of lounge, mariachi, punk, and Latino music. Their style has been described as a mix of "lounge lizard schmooze" and "punk Latino," drawing inspiration from artists like Lou Reed, Marc Ribot, and Willy DeVille, as well as the music of a Barcelona-based circus troupe.
The band released their debut album, Be Yourself, in 2002, which became a commercial success in Ireland, reaching multi-platinum status and spawning a top ten hit with the song "True Friends" after it was featured in a Vodafone ad. The album also earned critical acclaim in the UK when released in 2003. Jerry Fish won an Irish Music Award for Best Roots/Country Artist at the 2003 Meteor Awards and later presented the second series of the music show Other Voices.
The band toured extensively in Ireland and the UK from 2002 to 2004, playing at major festivals such as Glastonbury, V Festival, T in the Park, and Electric Picnic. In 2004, they released a live album and DVD, Live at The Spiegeltent.
In 2009, Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club released The Beautiful Untrue, which entered the Irish charts at number 7 and featured guest vocals from Imelda May and Carol Keogh. Around the same time, Jerry Fish worked on a project with actors Michael Madsen, David Carradine, and Harry Dean Stanton, as well as Iggy Pop, creating an album of spoken word poems by Madsen with a musical soundscape composed by Fish.
The song "Back to Before" from The Beautiful Untrue was featured in a 2010 Christmas ad campaign in Spain and Portugal for El Corte Inglés. The album was later released in Spain by Warner Music in 2011.
Jerry has curated and run his own Circus tent and area - The Jerry Fish Electric Sideshow in Fish Town at Electric Picnic, Ireland’s biggest music and arts festival, for over a decade.
In November 2024 he released his first album in 15 years called "Dreaming Of Daniel". The album features MayKay of Fight Like Apes.
