Chris de Burgh was born in Argentina to British diplomat parents, his family settled in Co. Wexford in the 1960s. Though his career began with art rock, he later shifted to more pop-oriented material. He achieved worldwide fame with his 1986 hit "The Lady in Red" and has sold over 45 million albums globally. His early life saw him move frequently due to his father's diplomatic work, spending time in places like Malta, Nigeria, and the Belgian Congo. He later attended Trinity College Dublin.
De Burgh's music career began in 1974 with his debut album, which was not commercially successful but gained a following in countries like Brazil. Over the years, he found significant success in Europe and South America, with notable albums like Spanish Train and Other Stories (1975) and The Getaway (1982). His breakthrough in the UK came with the 1986 hit "The Lady in Red," followed by successful albums like Into the Light (1986) and Flying Colours (1988), although his US career waned.
In later years, de Burgh continued to release albums, such as Footsteps (2008) and The Legend of Robin Hood (2021). He remains a popular figure in countries like Norway and Brazil.
