Enya, born Eithne Ní Bhraonáin in Gweedore, Co. Donegal, emerged as a unique musical artist blending folk, synthesized, and classical elements to create a distinctive new age style. Initially part of the Irish band Clannad with her siblings, she left in 1982 to collaborate with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. They first gained success with a soundtrack for a BBC series, leading to her breakthrough solo album, Watermark (1988), which sold eight million copies globally and established her as an international star.
Enya's subsequent albums included Shepherd Moons (1991), which sold over ten million copies, and Memory of Trees (1995), which also achieved significant success. After a greatest-hits collection in 1997, she released Day Without Rain (2000), featuring the hit single "May It Be" for The Lord of the Rings. This was followed by Amarantine (2005), a holiday EP, and And Winter Came (2008).
Her second greatest-hits compilation, The Very Best of Enya (2009), was followed by Dark Sky Island (2015), her first album in six years, with the single "Echoes in Rain" marking her increased engagement with media.
Enya is the best-selling Irish solo artist, with an estimated 80 million albums sold worldwide, and the second-best-selling music act from Ireland overall, after U2.
