Screaming Orphans are a pop and folk band from Bundoran, Co. Donegal, consisting of four sisters: Joan, Angela, Gráinne, and Marie Thérèse. The band blends original pop songs with traditional Irish music, drawing on their family roots. Since their formation in the 1990s, they've released 14 albums and 2 EPs.
The band’s early career included performing with their mother, a céilí singer, and touring as opening acts for artists like Sinéad O'Connor. The band has toured the United States and Europe since mid-1990s. In 1997, they played as Sinéad O'Connor's opening act and her back-up singers on her Gospel Oak Tour across Europe, America and Canada. They also collaborated with groups like Baaba Maal and Afro Celt Sound System. Signed to Warner UK/WEA, they recorded their debut album, Listen and Learn, in France. In the early 2000s, the band relocated to New York, and they toured the U.S. and Europe.
Screaming Orphans have received critical acclaim, with Taproom topping the iTunes World Music charts and their pop album Life in a Carnival charting in the U.S. and Ireland. Their 2020 folk album Sunshine and Moss, recorded during the pandemic, was well-received and reached high chart positions. They also released their first Christmas album in 2021, Happy Christmas Vol. 1, which garnered positive reviews and radio airplay.
