Cemetry, from Raheny, were the first band of drummer Gerry Daly of The Dark/The Spies fame. When the band formed in 1971, Finín was 14 years of age. Gerry, and Justin a year older. They played almost exclusively covers (Taste, Cream, Iron Butterfly, etc) apart from a few originals written by Finín. They headlined gigs on the north Dublin College circuit. Playing such venues as Mount Temple, St.Pauls, Santa Sabina, St. Fintans, St. Michaels Ballymun, Kostka college. They also supported many of the big acts of the day: The Edgar Broughton Band, Shakin’ Stevens, Mushroom, Alice, Angel, Horslips. Playing in such venues as The Restaurant in Belfield UCD, and Sergeant Peppers. Cemetery even played a gig for the staff in Butlins in The Pig and Whistle. Their one and only television appearance was at the end of a RADHARC documentary on Pre marriage courses. It was shot in Belfield. On the evening, Cemetery were supporting Mushroom. They were rather surprised to see a camera crew setting up and shooting Cemetery’s rendition of Sunshine of your love, by Cream. And then derigging! It was transmitted on the 30th of March 1974. The programme is still in the RTE programmes library.
One of their strangest gigs was in 1972, when they took to the altar of Seafield Road, Church of Ireland Church at 3 in the morning to perform ‘Stairway to Heaven’ as part of a 24 hour vigil for peace in Vietnam.
The band then morphed into a completely different set up when they became Hot Nutz/ The rolling thundering disgrace show. The band became a Frank Zappa/ Peter Cooke & Dudley Moore tribute act. With music, and drama sketches. Playing Such venues as Theatre L Belfield, and St Patricks College Drumcondra.
