Nerves were formed by vocalist and guitarist Kyle Thornton and drummer Adam Nealon from Foxford, Co. Mayo with the addition of bass player Charlie McCarthy from Spiddal Co. Galway. As a group they create a sonic concoction that blends punk, hardcore and industrial sounds. They draw inspiration from the likes of Fontaines D.C., The Altered Hours and My Bloody Valentine as well as international acts like The Cure, and Bauhaus.
The band came together in mid-2010s. Kyle and Adam were childhood friends and both started playing music around the same time when they were sixteen. They formed Nerves in 2016 and added Charlie on bass about a year later. The three members were students at BIMM Music Institute in Dublin. They played their first official gig on 20th August 2016 at the Foxford Riverfest. Regular gigging followed and by 8th March 2018 they had played their first headline Dublin gig. They released their first single "Faces" in 2019 with a launch gig at Galway’s Róisín Dubh on 6th Feb. Two more singles and an EP followed that year and there were further releases in 2020 and 2021. The 2021 single 'Leigue' was inspired by the difficulty in processing grief experienced by lyricist Kyle Thornton after the death of a close friend.
2022 and 2023 were quiet years for the band but 2024 was an eventful year. In March the band announced that bass player Charlie McCarthy was leaving the band (to join Gurriers) and two new members were joining, Ryan Mortell (ex-Naked Lungs) on bass and Eoin Keigher (ex-Silverglass) on guitar. Nerves released the EP Glórach in April 2024 and embarked on a European tour in October. Nerves performed at Other Voices Live Nov/Dec 2024.
In June 2025 Nerves announced a new EP Iarmhaireacht to be released in August and released a single from the album “Takes A Second” after having released “Dirty Fingers” earlier in April. The track sets the tone for a record that navigates themes of mental illness, substance abuse, and emigration, against a backdrop of rural Irish life.
