About Stump

Stump front man Mick Lynch and drummer Rob McKahy were from Cork. The band also included Kev Hopper on bass and Chris Salmon on guitar, both English. McKahy brought Lynch into the band after the original singer left. Both Lynch and McKahy were in a number of Cork bands before moving to London in the early 80s. Lynch had been in a short-lived band with Cathal Coughlan and Sean O’Hagan called Constant Reminders and following that a punk band called Mean Features after Coughlan and O’Hagan went on to form Microdisney.

In 1986, Stump released their debut four-track EP, Mud on a Colon, through Ron Johnson Records, followed by a self-released mini album, Quirk Out, produced by Hugh Jones. The mini album featured the cult hit "Buffalo," which was included in NME's C86 compilation and gained attention from Channel 4’s The Tube. Their consistent UK touring and media coverage, including features in NME and Melody Maker, helped Quirk Out stay in the UK Indie Charts for 26 weeks, peaking at number 2. A 1986 session for John Peel's show was released as a Peel Session EP in 1987, leading to a signing with Ensign Records.

Their sole album, A Fierce Pancake (1988), was recorded in Berlin and London, produced by Holger Hiller with Stephen Street’s help, and mixed by Hugh Jones. Despite internal disagreements during the recording, the band was satisfied with the final product. Three singles were released from the album: "Chaos," "Charlton Heston" (which hit number 72 on the UK Singles Chart), and a re-released "Buffalo" (featured only on the US edition). The album did not achieve the anticipated crossover success, leading to the band's breakup later in the year.

Stump maintained a cult following, which led to the 2008 release of The Complete Anthology by Sanctuary Records, a 3-CD set featuring their entire catalog. Mick Lynch passed away in December 2015.
