Donegal band Clannad were originators of the new-age celtic sound

About Clannad

Clannad were formed in 1970 as Clann as Dobhar in Gweedore, Co. Donegal, by siblings Ciarán, Pól and Moya Brennan and their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. They shortened their name to Clannad in 1973. They released 3 albums in the 70s. Their sister Enya was part of the group in the early 80s before going on to her own very successful solo career. They achieved international success with their single "Theme from Harry's Game", the title track for a TV drama, in 1982.

The band operated as a 4 piece in the 90s after Pól Brennan left to work with Peter Gabriel as a producer for the WOMAD arts festival. They were on hiatus from 1999 to 2006. Pól Brennan returned to the band in 2011. Pádraig Duggan died in 2016 and the group embarked on their farewell tour in 2020 as a quartet. The tour was interrupted by the Covid pandemic but continued in 2021. Noel Duggan died in 2022 and the band played their final farewell concert at 3Arena in Dublin on 18 February 2023.
